New standard and restrictions on childrenswear and textiles

Some cases of accidental strangulation and entrapment in children are due to the presence of cords and drawstrings in the clothes. Many countries have already established a set of specific requirements to minimize the risk of accident.
The JISC – the Japanese committee which deals, among other things, with certification, accreditation and standardization – has decided to follow this trend, by formulating a new standard whose final version will be released in in December 2015.
The new FDJIS L 4129 standard, which is similar to the European standard EN 14682, defines the minimum security requirements to be met in the production and sale of clothing with cords and drawstrings and intended for children under 13 years.

Another interesting innovation from Japan concerns the amendment to the Act on Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances, with particular reference to the azo compounds in textiles.
The amendment, which was recently published by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, regulats 24 different aromatic amines, prohibiting their use in amounts exceeding those prescribed. The amendment will come into effect from 1 April 2016.
